About this calculator

This converter translates a length in nanometres into ångströms using the fixed relationship 1 nm = 10 Å (and equivalently 1 Å = 100 picometres), since both units are decimal fractions of a metre — a nanometre is 10⁻⁹ m and an ångström is 10⁻¹⁰ m.

The ångström, named after physicist Anders Jonas Ångström, remains the everyday unit for atomic radii, bond lengths and X-ray/crystal-lattice spacings even though it isn't an SI unit, because typical atomic distances (roughly 0.5–3 Å) come out as convenient whole numbers. Chemists, crystallographers and semiconductor engineers switch between nanometres and ångströms constantly depending on whether they're describing a device feature or an individual bond.
