About this calculator

An operating budget lays out the income and expenses a business expects over a period — typically a month, quarter, or year — and nets them out to a projected bottom line. It's the core planning document used by managers and small-business owners to check whether a period's activity will be profitable before it happens, not just after the books close.

This calculator takes your total projected income and total projected expenses and returns net income (income minus expenses) along with operating margin — net income as a percentage of income — which tells you how much of every unit of revenue actually turns into profit. It's the same structure used in monthly budget reviews, annual planning cycles, and simple profitability checks before committing to new spending.
