About this calculator
Sizing a PA (public address) system means estimating how much amplifier power, in watts, is needed to reach every listener at an adequate, undistorted sound pressure level — a function of how many people you’re covering, whether the venue is indoor or outdoor, and how much extra power headroom you reserve above the average level to cleanly reproduce loud transient peaks without clipping. Sound engineers commonly budget somewhere around 1–2 watts per person for indoor venues with reflective walls and ceilings that help carry sound, and noticeably more per person outdoors, where there are no reflective surfaces and sound disperses freely.
Headroom matters because program material (music, speech peaks) has a much higher instantaneous peak level than its average level — typically 10 dB or more of crest factor — so an amplifier sized only to the average loudness will clip and distort on peaks. This calculator combines audience size, venue type, and a headroom factor to estimate the total PA power you should budget for, the same rough sizing step a sound engineer runs before choosing speaker and amplifier models.
