About this calculator
A paraboloid of revolution is the bowl-shaped solid formed by rotating a parabola around its axis — the shape of a satellite dish, a parabolic reflector, or a paraboloid water tank. Its volume, found by integrating the cross-sectional disc area π·y² along the axis for a parabola y² = (r²/h)·x, works out to the elegantly simple V = ½ · π · r² · h, exactly half the volume of the cylinder that encloses it.
That “exactly half the cylinder” relationship is a handy sanity check and a classic calculus result, and it makes the paraboloid volume quick to estimate for anything from dish antenna capacity to concrete or liquid fill calculations for paraboloid-shaped containers. This calculator takes the base radius and height and returns the volume directly from that formula.
