About this calculator

This calculator finds the simple payback period: how many years it takes for the cumulative cash flow from an investment to equal its upfront cost, using the formula initial investment ÷ annual cash flow. Unlike NPV or IRR, it ignores the time value of money — it just answers "when do I break even," not "was this a good deal."

It's a quick sanity check used by small-business owners weighing a new machine or piece of equipment, homeowners estimating how long solar panels take to pay for themselves in energy savings, and early-stage investors screening projects before running a fuller discounted cash-flow analysis.
