About this calculator

Airlines that ship pets in the cargo hold follow the IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR), which set minimum crate dimensions so an animal can stand, turn around, and lie down naturally. The rule of thumb is length = nose-to-tail body length plus half the leg length, width = shoulder width × 2, and height = standing height from floor to the top of the head or ears, plus a growth allowance.

Airlines, freight forwarders, and pet relocation companies use these dimensions to reject or approve a crate at check-in, so an undersized crate can mean a pet is turned away at the gate. This calculator takes the length, leg, shoulder, and standing-height measurements you enter and rounds up to the nearest standard commercial crate size that meets IATA’s minimum.
