About this calculator

Every standard telephone keypad maps letters to digits in a fixed pattern set by ITU-T Recommendation E.161: 2=ABC, 3=DEF, 4=GHI, 5=JKL, 6=MNO, 7=PQRS, 8=TUV, and 9=WXYZ, with 0 and 1 carrying no letters. This calculator converts any typed text into that digit sequence, letter by letter.

The most common reason to do this is decoding or creating a vanity phone number — a business memorizes better as 1-800-FLOWERS than as its raw digits, and this same letter-to-number mapping is what lets a customer dial either form and reach the same line. The underlying scheme is also the basis of T9 predictive text, the input method used on older mobile keypads before touchscreens made full keyboards standard.
