About this calculator

The phot is the CGS (centimetre-gram-second) unit of illuminance — 1 lumen per square centimetre — while the lux is the SI unit, 1 lumen per square metre. Because a square metre contains 10,000 square centimetres, the conversion is a clean 1 phot = 10,000 lux.

The phot is essentially obsolete in modern engineering (SI's lux dominates lighting design worldwide), but it still turns up in older physics and photography texts, historical scientific literature, and some legacy optical equipment specifications, so converting it to lux is mostly a matter of reading and comparing older sources against modern lux-based standards.
