About this calculator

This calculator finds gravitational potential energy using PE = mgh — mass times gravitational acceleration (9.8 m/s² on Earth) times height above a reference point — the energy an object has stored purely because of its position in a gravitational field.

Physics students use it to solve energy-conservation problems where potential energy converts into kinetic energy (a ball dropped from a height, a roller coaster at its peak), and engineers use the same formula to estimate the energy stored in elevated water for hydroelectric plants or the energy a falling object could release in a safety analysis.
