About this calculator

Pour-over brewing (V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave) is dosed by weight, not volume, because coffee density varies with roast and grind — the standard is a brew ratio expressed as 1:X, meaning 1 gram of coffee for every X grams of water. This calculator inverts that: given the water you want to brew and your chosen ratio, it divides the water weight by X to tell you exactly how many grams of ground coffee to dose.

The Specialty Coffee Association’s general guidance sits around a 1:15 to 1:18 ratio, with 1:16 or 1:17 a common starting point for pour-over — stronger cups move toward 1:14–1:15, lighter cups toward 1:17–1:18. Home baristas and café staff use this kind of ratio math to keep extraction consistent every time they brew, then adjust grind size and pour rate to dial in taste rather than guessing at the dose.
