About this calculator

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines set a recommended total pregnancy weight gain range based on pre-pregnancy BMI category: roughly 28-40 lbs for underweight, 25-35 lbs for normal weight, 15-25 lbs for overweight, and 11-20 lbs for obese, with adjustments for twins or other multiples.

Obstetricians, midwives, and expectant mothers use this range as a general checkpoint during prenatal visits to see whether weight gain is tracking too fast, too slow, or on pace, since both excessive and insufficient gestational weight gain carry higher risks for the mother and baby — though any individual's ideal range should still be confirmed with a care provider.
