Rent Split Calculator

Find each person’s share of rent.

How it is calculated

The tool adds the monthly rent and the shared utilities and divides the sum evenly: share = (rent + utilities) ÷ people. Utilities are optional and treated as 0 if left empty. The number of people must be greater than zero. The result is each person's monthly share with two decimals. This is an equal split, so it does not weight rooms by size, private bathrooms or income. If rooms differ, adjust the shares by hand (for example give the larger room a bigger percentage) and make sure the individual shares still add up to the total.

Worked example

Rent is 1,500 and shared utilities are 150, so the total is 1,500 + 150 = 1,650. Three people share it: 1,650 / 3 = $550.00 each per month. Without utilities each person would pay 1,500 / 3 = 500, so the bills add 50 per head. A fourth roommate would lower the share to 1,650 / 4 = 412.50.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to include utilities, which makes the rent share look lower than the real monthly outlay.
  • Counting only the tenants who sign the lease and not everyone who actually lives there.
  • Splitting equally when rooms differ greatly in size or quality.
  • Typing the yearly rent or a weekly figure while the utilities are monthly.

About this calculator

This calculator divides total rent (and optionally shared utilities) evenly among housemates, and can also weight the split by room size or a chosen ratio when bedrooms aren't the same size or one person gets the master suite — rather than assuming everyone should pay an identical flat share.

It's used by roommates setting up a new lease, by friends splitting a vacation rental, and by landlords or property managers explaining a fair breakdown to tenants when the apartment's rooms clearly aren't equal in value.
