About this calculator

When returning a purchase, the amount you actually get back is rarely the full item price: many retailers deduct a restocking fee (a percentage charged to cover the cost of reprocessing a returned item for resale) and, if return shipping isn't free, the cost of shipping the item back. This calculator subtracts both deductions from the item price to show the exact net refund you should expect to see credited.

The calculation is useful to online shoppers deciding whether a return is even worth it — on a lower-priced item, a restocking fee plus return shipping can eat a surprisingly large share of the refund, sometimes making a return barely worthwhile. E-commerce and customer service teams use the same logic in reverse, to communicate clearly to customers up front what they'll actually receive back before they commit to sending an item back.
