About this calculator

Roof pitch describes how steep a roof is, traditionally expressed as rise over run — for example a "6-in-12" roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal run. This calculator converts that rise-and-run pair into the angle in degrees (using arctan of rise/run), the x-in-12 pitch notation, the slope as a percentage grade, and a simplified slope ratio.

Roofers, carpenters, and framers rely on pitch conversions when ordering trusses, calculating rafter lengths, and estimating how much roofing material (shingles, underlayment) a given surface area will actually require, since steeper roofs have more surface area than their footprint suggests. Pitch also affects drainage and snow-load design — very low-slope roofs need different waterproofing details, while steep pitches shed snow and rain faster but require more fall-protection during installation.
