About this calculator

A running total (or cumulative sum) turns a list of numbers into a new list where each entry is the sum of everything up to and including that point, rather than a single final total — so instead of just knowing the grand sum, you can see exactly how it built up step by step. It's the same operation as a cumulative-sum (cumsum) function found in spreadsheet software and data-analysis libraries.

Bookkeepers and accountants use running totals to maintain a ledger balance that updates with every transaction, sports statisticians use them to track a cumulative score or points tally as a game or season progresses, and inventory managers use them to watch stock levels rise and fall with each shipment or sale — in every case, the point is tracking the trajectory of a total, not just its final value.

This calculator takes a list of numbers and returns the cumulative total after each one, alongside the final sum.
