Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax to any amount.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool adds tax on top of a net (pre-tax) price: tax = amount × rate / 100 and total = amount + tax, where rate is a percentage (8 means 8%). It applies one flat rate to the whole amount, and negative values give no result.
It does not look up any rate for you. Sales tax, VAT and GST differ by country, state and product category, so you must type the rate that applies where you buy. To go the other way, from a tax-inclusive price back to the net price, you need to divide by 1 + rate / 100 instead; this tool only goes forward from net to gross.
Worked example
A purchase has a net price of 250 and the local rate is 8%. Tax is 250 × 8 / 100 = $20.00. The total you pay is 250 + 20 = $270.00. Note that $20.00 is 8% of the net price, which is about 7.4% of the final $270.00 total, not 8%.
Common mistakes
- Entering a price that already includes tax. The tool would add tax a second time.
- Typing the rate as a decimal (0.08) instead of a percentage (8), which gives almost no tax.
- Using a rate for the wrong place or product; reduced rates often apply to food, books or medicine.
- Trying to reverse a gross price by subtracting the rate percentage; the correct way is dividing by 1 plus the rate.
About this calculator
This calculator applies a tax rate to a net (pre-tax) amount to find both the tax owed and the gross total, using the straightforward relationship of multiplying the net amount by the tax rate to get the tax, then adding that to the original amount for the final price. Since sales tax rates vary by country, state or region, entering the applicable local rate makes the result specific to wherever the purchase is happening.
Shoppers use it to estimate the final price of a purchase before checkout, especially for larger buys where the tax amount is significant enough to matter for budgeting. Small business owners and freelancers use the same calculation to add the correct tax to an invoice or quote, and it's also used in reverse-style comparisons when working out how much of an already-taxed total was the tax portion versus the original price.
