Shoe sizing systems are built around measured foot length, but the three major systems scale that length differently: EU (Paris point) sizing increments by 2/3 of a centimeter per size and adds a fixed manufacturing allowance to the raw foot length, while US and UK sizing use their own separate scales historically based on barleycorns (1/3 inch), with the US scale offset from the UK scale by roughly one full size. These systems were never unified internationally, which is why converting between them from a single physical measurement, rather than trusting a size label from one system to translate directly to another, gives more reliable results.
