About this calculator

Sleep debt is the cumulative shortfall between the sleep your body needs each night and the sleep you actually get, added up over consecutive nights. If you need 8 hours but only get 6, that's 2 hours of debt for that night; over a week of the same pattern, the deficit compounds to 14 hours, even though no single night felt extreme on its own.

Sleep researchers use this concept to explain why chronic partial sleep restriction produces effects similar to a night or two of total sleep deprivation: the deficit accumulates in the body even when each individual night's shortfall seems mild. Tracking sleep debt helps people recognise when fatigue, poor concentration or mood changes are being driven by an accumulated shortfall rather than a single bad night, and gives a concrete number to work toward when planning recovery sleep or adjusting a sleep schedule.

Enter your nightly sleep need, your actual average sleep and the number of nights, and this calculator totals the hours of sleep debt you've built up.
