A URL slug is the clean, human-readable identifier that appears at the end of a web address — turning “My Article: 2026 Guide!” into something like “my-article-2026-guide”. Slugification lowercases the text, strips accents and diacritics through transliteration (so “café” becomes “cafe”), removes punctuation and symbols, and replaces spaces and remaining non-alphanumeric characters with hyphens (or underscores), collapsing repeats along the way.

Every CMS, blogging platform and e-commerce catalog does this automatically when you save a title, because clean slugs are both more readable for humans and better for SEO — search engines and users alike parse hyphenated keyword URLs more easily than URLs full of spaces, symbols or percent-encoded characters.
