The slug is the coherent unit of mass in the US customary (foot-pound-second) system, defined so that a 1-lbf force accelerates a 1-slug mass at 1 ft/s² — it's deliberately much larger than a pound-mass, and converts to metric at 1 slug = 14.5939 kg (about 32.174 pounds).

Because engineering equations like F = m·a only balance correctly in FPS units when mass is in slugs (not pounds), US aerospace, mechanical and structural engineers doing calculations in imperial units convert to slugs whenever they need dynamically consistent mass values, then convert the result to kilograms when reporting to metric-using colleagues or standards.
