About this calculator
This calculator estimates a solar system's energy output from its size in kW, the local peak sun hours per day (a measure of usable sunlight, not daylight hours), and a system derate factor that accounts for inverter losses, wiring, dust, and temperature effects, giving daily, monthly, and yearly kWh production.
Homeowners considering solar use it to sanity-check an installer's quote against their own electricity bill, and installers use the same math to size a system for a customer's expected usage. Peak sun hours vary by location and season, so the estimate is only as good as the input.
