About this calculator

Span of control is an organizational-design metric measuring how many direct reports a manager oversees on average, calculated as total employees divided by total number of managers. A narrow span (few reports per manager) allows closer supervision and mentoring but adds management layers and cost; a wide span pushes more autonomy onto individual contributors and flattens the org chart, but can leave managers stretched too thin to give each report meaningful attention.

HR and organizational-design teams use span of control when restructuring a company, benchmarking management layers against industry norms (customer support or manufacturing often run wider spans than R&D or executive teams, which tend to run narrower), and diagnosing whether a company has become too top-heavy with managers relative to individual contributors.

This calculator takes your total headcount and number of managers and returns the average span of control.
