About this calculator

Squaring an integer — multiplying it by itself — is one of the most basic operations in arithmetic, but this tool goes a step further and checks whether the result (or the number you entered) is a perfect square: an integer that is exactly the square of another integer, like 1, 4, 9, 16, 25.

It reports the square (n²), tests whether n itself is already a perfect square by checking if its square root is a whole number, and finds the nearest perfect square by rounding the square root to the closest integer and squaring it back. 50, for instance, sits between the perfect squares 49 (7²) and 64 (8²), with 49 as the nearest.

Students use this to check arithmetic homework and build number sense around squares and square roots, and it comes up in programming and puzzle contexts wherever perfect-square detection is needed.
