About this calculator

Different teas need different steeping conditions to avoid bitterness or under-extraction: delicate green tea steeps around 2-3 minutes at roughly 75-80°C (170-175°F), black tea needs closer to boiling (95-100°C / 200-212°F) for 3-5 minutes, oolong sits between the two at 85-90°C for 3-5 minutes, and white tea and herbal infusions have their own ranges. This calculator recommends the leaf amount (typically around 2g of loose tea per 200 mL of water, roughly a teaspoon per cup), steep time, and water temperature based on the tea type and cup size you select.

Water that's too hot scalds delicate leaves and pulls out excess tannins, producing a bitter, astringent cup, while water that's too cool under-extracts and leaves the tea flat — a balance tea enthusiasts, cafés dialing in a house brewing standard, and anyone new to loose-leaf tea use this calculator to hit consistently without needing to memorize steeping charts for a dozen tea types.
