About this calculator

A tumble turn (flip or somersault turn) lets a swimmer reverse direction at the wall mid-motion, without stopping to touch and push off by hand the way a touch turn requires — and it's the turn style competitive freestyle and backstroke swimmers are expected to master.

Coaches and swimmers estimate the cumulative time saved over a race or a workout by multiplying the per-turn time difference between tumble and touch turns by the number of turns performed, since even a fraction of a second per turn compounds meaningfully across a multi-lap swim. It's used by swim coaches, competitive swimmers, and age-group teams to justify the drilling time spent perfecting flip turns.
