Bracket Breakdown

Bracket Rate Taxable Tax

How it is calculated

The tool applies the Turkish wage-earner (ücret) income tax tariff for 2018, a progressive scale where each slice of income is taxed only at its own bracket's rate: 15% up to 14,800, 20% from 14,800 to 34,000, 27% from 34,000 to 120,000 and 35% above that. For each bracket it takes taxable slice × rate and adds them up. Net income is income − total tax, and the effective rate is total tax / income × 100. Enter the annual taxable income in lira. The tool only computes income tax on that figure: it does not deduct social security, stamp tax, minimum-living allowance or other relief, and the 2018 non-wage tariff has a different third bracket limit. Other years and countries use other brackets.

Worked example

Annual taxable income of 100,000. First slice: 14,800 × 15% = 2,220.00. Second slice: 34,000 − 14,800 = 19,200 × 20% = 3,840.00. Third slice: the remaining 100,000 − 34,000 = 66,000 × 27% = 17,820.00, and it stays inside this bracket because the limit is 120,000. Total tax = 23,880.00 ₺. Net income is 76,120.00 ₺ and the effective rate is 23.88%, lower than the 27% top marginal rate reached.

Common mistakes

  • Believing the whole income is taxed at the highest bracket reached; only the slice inside each bracket is taxed at that rate.
  • Entering the monthly salary when the brackets are annual, which understates the tax.
  • Entering gross salary before deducting social security and unemployment contributions, when the tax base is the income after those deductions.
  • Using this 2018 tariff for another year's income; thresholds and rates changed in later years.
  • Expecting the output to be the final payroll figure, when it excludes stamp tax and the minimum-living allowance of that period.

About this calculator

This calculator applies Turkey's 2018 progressive income tax brackets — 15%, 20%, 27% and 35%, the tariff in force before the 40% top bracket was introduced — to a gross salary or income figure, walking through each bracket to find the total tax and the resulting net pay. Because the system is progressive, only the slice of income that falls inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Accountants and payroll staff use it for historical work: reconciling a 2018 payslip, preparing a back-dated filing, or seeing how far the brackets have shifted since. Enter your gross income to get the tax breakdown by bracket and your net income.
