About this calculator

The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system divides the earth into 60 north-south zones, each projected onto a flat plane so that positions can be given in meters — easting and northing — rather than angular degrees, which makes it convenient for measuring distances directly on a map. Converting a UTM coordinate back to geographic latitude and longitude requires reversing that Transverse Mercator projection for the specified zone, hemisphere, and datum, most commonly WGS84, the reference ellipsoid used by GPS.

This converter takes your UTM easting, northing, zone number, and hemisphere and returns the corresponding latitude and longitude in decimal degrees. Land surveyors, GIS analysts, military and search-and-rescue personnel working from grid references, and hikers using UTM-gridded topographic maps use it to translate grid coordinates into the lat/long format needed by consumer GPS devices, mapping software, and navigation apps.
