About this calculator

The variable cost ratio shows what portion of each sales dollar is consumed by costs that scale directly with production or sales volume — materials, direct labor, sales commissions — as opposed to fixed costs like rent that stay constant regardless of output. It's calculated as variable costs divided by sales, expressed as a percentage.

This ratio is the mirror image of the contribution margin ratio (the two always sum to 100%), and both are core inputs to cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis and break-even calculations used by managerial accountants, financial analysts, and business owners. A lower variable cost ratio means more of each additional sales dollar flows through to covering fixed costs and generating profit, which is why companies track it closely when pricing products, evaluating cost structure, or deciding whether to pursue a higher-volume, lower-margin strategy.
