About this calculator

An EU VAT number pairs a two-letter country prefix with a digit sequence of a fixed length set by each member state’s tax authority — for example Germany’s DE followed by 9 digits, France’s FR with 2 characters plus 9 digits, Italy’s IT with 11 digits, Spain’s ES with a letter-digit-letter pattern, and the Netherlands’ NL with 9 digits, “B”, and 2 more digits. Germany’s number additionally carries a checksum computed with the ISO 7064 MOD 11-10 algorithm, which this format check flags separately.

Businesses trading across EU borders must quote a valid VAT number to apply the reverse-charge mechanism and zero-rate intra-community supplies, so accountants, bookkeepers and invoicing systems routinely check that a supplied number matches the expected shape for its country before accepting it. This tool checks format and length only — it does not query VIES or any live tax registry to confirm the number is actually registered.
