About this calculator
The vershok was a traditional Russian unit of length, equal to exactly 4.445 cm (1¾ inches), used before Russia's adoption of the metric system in the early 20th century. It formed part of the old Russian system of measures alongside the arshin, sazhen, and versta.
One of its most enduring uses was in expressing horse height: a horse's height was traditionally given in vershoks above two arshins (a base of about 142 cm), a convention still occasionally referenced in Russian equestrian and breeding literature. Historians, genealogists, and translators working with old Russian documents, literature, or historical technical texts use a converter like this to make sense of measurements recorded in vershoks.
