About this calculator

The Åstrand–Ryhming step test estimates VO2max without any lab equipment: you step up and down at a fixed cadence for several minutes until your heart rate reaches a steady state, and that steady-state heart rate — combined with the step height and your body weight — is read against the Åstrand nomogram (or its equivalent regression equations) to predict maximal oxygen uptake. Because heart rate at a given submaximal workload tends to run higher in older adults, an age correction factor is applied afterward to adjust the nomogram value, which was originally calibrated on young adults.

Exercise physiologists, coaches and fitness testers use this test where a treadmill or cycle ergometer with gas analysis isn't available or practical — in schools, gyms, occupational health screening and field research — because it needs only a step, a metronome and a heart rate monitor. It trades some accuracy for accessibility, submaximal effort and low cost, making it one of the most widely used fitness field tests.

This calculator takes your steady-state heart rate, step rate, step height, weight, age and sex, and returns your estimated VO2max with the age correction already applied.
