About this calculator

The disk method finds the volume of a solid formed when a curve is revolved around an axis, by imagining the solid sliced into infinitely thin circular disks and integrating their areas. For a straight line y = m·x + c revolved around the x-axis over an interval [a, b], each disk has radius y(x) and the volume is V = π ∫ [y(x)]² dx — this calculator evaluates that integral directly, producing a frustum-shaped (or cylindrical) solid.

This is a core technique taught in every first-year calculus course covering applications of integration, and it generalizes the volume formulas for cones and cylinders you learn in geometry. Engineers and product designers use the same disk-and-washer logic to compute the volume and mass of lathe-turned parts, tapered shafts, and other axially symmetric objects before they're manufactured.
