About this calculator

Under the pre-2020 U.S. Form W-4 system, each withholding allowance you claimed reduced the amount of your wages subject to federal income tax withholding by a fixed dollar amount set annually by the IRS (for example, $4,300 in 2020). This calculator multiplies the number of allowances by that per-allowance value to get your annual reduction in taxable wages, then divides by your number of pay periods to show the reduction applied to each paycheck.

Getting the allowance count right mattered because too few allowances meant over-withholding (a larger refund but less take-home pay all year), while too many meant under-withholding and a possible tax bill or penalty. Payroll administrators, HR staff processing legacy W-4s, and workers comparing old and new withholding rules use this figure to understand how allowances translated into actual paycheck impact before the IRS moved to the allowance-free W-4 format.
