About this calculator

The AIMS65 score is a validated clinical risk-stratification tool for patients presenting with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding, published by Saltzman et al. in 2011. It assigns one point each for five simple, readily-available criteria — the mnemonic AIMS65 itself spells them out: Albumin below 3.0 g/dL, INR above 1.5, Mental status altered, Systolic blood pressure ≤ 90 mmHg, and age 65 or older.

The resulting score out of 5 correlates strongly with in-hospital mortality, need for intensive care, and length of stay — unlike some older GI-bleed scores, it doesn't require an endoscopy result, so it can be calculated the moment a patient arrives, making it a fast triage aid for emergency physicians and gastroenterologists deciding how urgently and intensively to manage a bleed.
