About this calculator

One of the most common rules parents use to set a child's allowance is the “dollar per year of age” rule: a weekly allowance equal to one dollar (or one unit of local currency) multiplied by the child's age, so a 7-year-old gets roughly 7 per week and a 12-year-old gets roughly 12. The rule scales naturally as the child gets older, so parents do not have to renegotiate the amount from scratch every year.

This calculator applies that rule to a child's age to suggest a fair weekly allowance, giving parents a simple, widely used starting point that can then be adjusted up or down for chores expected, family budget, or local norms.
