Tip Calculator
From a bill amount, tip % and party size: tip amount, total bill and per-person share.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool works out a tip on the bill and splits the total between diners. tip = bill × rate / 100, total = bill + tip and per person = total / people. The bill is the amount before the tip, the rate is the tip percentage (18 means 18%), and people is the number of people sharing, with a minimum of 1 if the field is empty or invalid. The split is equal and includes the tip. The bill cannot be negative, and a tip rate must be entered. Results are rounded to two decimals, so the per-person shares can differ from the total by a cent or so. Tipping customs vary by country, and in some places service is already included in the bill.
Worked example
A restaurant bill is 84.50, you want to leave an 18% tip, and 4 people share. Tip = 84.50 × 18 / 100 = 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21. Total = 84.50 + 15.21 = $99.71. Per person = 99.71 / 4 = 24.9275, which is shown as $24.93. Four payments of $24.93 add up to $99.72, one cent more than the exact total, because each share is rounded.
Common mistakes
- Typing the rate as 0.18 instead of 18; it is read as a percentage, so the tip would be almost nothing.
- Adding a tip on a bill that already contains a service charge, and tipping twice.
- Entering the bill after tax when local custom is to tip on the pre-tax amount, which raises the tip.
- Leaving the number of people blank for a shared bill, so the whole amount is shown for one person.
- Expecting an uneven split by order; the result divides the total equally, so people who ordered less pay the same.
About this calculator
This calculator takes a bill total and a chosen tip percentage and works out both the tip amount and the grand total, then divides that total evenly across however many people are splitting the check. The math itself is a straightforward percentage calculation, but doing it in your head at a table after a meal is exactly the kind of quick arithmetic people prefer to skip.
It gets used constantly at restaurants, cafes, and bars, especially by groups where everyone wants to pay an equal share rather than working out who ordered what. It is also useful when tipping conventions differ from what someone is used to, since adjusting the percentage instantly shows how the total changes.
