Splitting a restaurant bill fairly involves two separate calculations layered together: first the tip is calculated as a percentage of the bill (commonly 15–20% in the US, though norms vary by country and by service type), then the tip is added to the subtotal to get the total, and finally that total is divided by the number of people to get each person's share. Doing this by hand under time pressure at the table is where mental-math errors creep in — especially when the bill includes tax, which some diners tip on and others don't.
