About this calculator

A beer's calorie count comes from two separate sources: alcohol itself (about 7 kcal per gram) and residual carbohydrates — the unfermented sugars left over from the brewing process. This calculator estimates both by combining the serving size with the alcohol by volume (ABV) and the original gravity (the wort's sugar density before fermentation), a method rooted in brewing chemistry that's more accurate than flat lookup tables since it accounts for how much sugar a particular beer actually fermented out.

The approach is used by homebrewers calibrating recipes, nutrition-conscious drinkers comparing styles, and brewery labeling teams estimating nutrition facts for lighter or specialty beers. Because original gravity varies widely between a light lager and a high-gravity stout, splitting alcohol calories from carbohydrate calories gives a clearer picture than ABV alone of why two beers with similar strength can differ in calorie count.
