About this calculator

Alcohol supplies about 7 kilocalories per gram — more than carbohydrate or protein at 4 kcal/g and second only to fat’s 9 kcal/g — so the calories in a drink come from two sources: the pure ethanol itself and any sugars, juices or mixers added to it. A standard drink is typically defined as around 14 grams of pure alcohol, which works out to roughly 12 oz of regular beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits, though the exact calorie count for any given drink depends on its volume and alcohol-by-volume (ABV) percentage.

People tracking calorie intake for weight management, nutrition labeling professionals, and health-conscious drinkers use this kind of breakdown to see how much of a cocktail’s or beer’s calories come from alcohol itself versus added sugar, since a sweet cocktail can carry far more calories than its alcohol content alone would suggest. Bartenders and beverage companies also reference standard-drink definitions when communicating serving sizes and alcohol content to consumers.

This calculator takes the volume and ABV of any alcoholic beverage and returns its total calories, the grams of pure alcohol it contains, and how many standard drinks it counts as.
