About this calculator

The benefits load (or benefits load factor) is the percentage that employer-paid benefits and payroll taxes add on top of an employee’s base salary, capturing costs like health insurance premiums, retirement plan contributions, paid time off, workers’ compensation insurance, and the employer’s share of Social Security and Medicare taxes. It’s calculated as total annual benefits cost divided by base annual salary, expressed as a percentage.

Employers use the benefits load to calculate the true “fully loaded” cost of an employee — base salary is only part of what a hire actually costs the company — which matters for budgeting, pricing services on a cost-plus basis, and deciding whether to hire an employee versus a contractor. In the United States, benefits loads commonly run in the range of 20% to 40% of base salary depending on the benefits package and industry, though this varies significantly by company and country.
