About this calculator

The Bengali calendar (Bangabda, abbreviated BS) is a solar calendar traditionally used in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal for cultural, agricultural and, in Bangladesh, official purposes alongside the Gregorian calendar. Its year count runs roughly 593–594 years behind the Gregorian year, and its New Year — Pohela Boishakh — falls around April 14 each Gregorian year, unlike the Gregorian January 1 start, because the Bengali year begins with the solar month of Boishakh rather than a fixed civil date.

Converting between the two systems is therefore not a simple year subtraction: the Bengali year only advances at mid-April, so a Gregorian date in January–mid-April maps to the tail end of the previous Bengali year, while a date from mid-April onward maps to the current one, with the Bengali month also shifting accordingly. This calculator applies that approximate offset and month mapping to a Gregorian date so you can see the corresponding Bengali San year and month, used for holidays, harvest festivals and traditional record-keeping.
