About this calculator
The Juche calendar is North Korea's official dating system, adopted in 1997 and used alongside (and often instead of) the Gregorian calendar in state media, publications, and official documents. It counts years from the birth of Kim Il Sung, the country's founding leader, treating 1912 as Juche 1 — so the conversion is simply Juche year = Gregorian year − 1911, with no year zero and no leap-year adjustment needed since it tracks the same 365/366-day cycle as the Gregorian calendar.
This converter takes a Gregorian year and returns the corresponding Juche year. Translators and journalists working with North Korean state publications, historians and Korea specialists, and researchers cross-referencing dates that appear only in Juche form (often written alongside the Gregorian year, e.g. "Juche 113 (2024)") use it to quickly move between the two systems without doing the subtraction by hand each time.
