About this calculator

The Bishop score is an obstetric scoring system that adds up five components of the cervix — dilation, effacement, station, consistency, and position — each rated on its own point scale, to give a total that usually ranges from 0 to 13. It was devised by Dr. Edward Bishop in 1964 to predict how ready the cervix is for labor.

Obstetricians and midwives use the score before scheduling a labor induction: a higher score, generally 8 or above, suggests the cervix is favorable and induction is likely to succeed, while a low score often points toward a cervical ripening agent first.
