About this calculator

The Boston Marathon uses age- and gender-based qualifying time standards — runners must post an official marathon finish at or under the standard for their age group and division to apply for entry, and because Boston is oversubscribed, the Boston Athletic Association typically also applies a cutoff buffer below the raw standard in years when applications exceed available spots. Converting the qualifying time into a required pace per kilometer and per mile makes the standard actionable for training rather than just a finish-line target.

Marathoners chasing a Boston Qualifier ("BQ") use this to reverse-engineer their training paces months out from race day, and adding a personal safety buffer on top of the raw standard — often several minutes — is common practice because meeting the standard exactly is not a guarantee of acceptance in a competitive year. Knowing exactly how many minutes-per-mile faster you need to run, rather than just the finish time gap, is what turns a qualifying goal into a concrete training pace.

This calculator takes your age and division, looks up your BQ standard, and returns the pace per km and per mile you need to hold, along with how far off your current pace or recent race time is from that target.
