About this calculator

Rowing calorie burn is estimated the same way as most steady-state cardio: the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) formula, calories = METs × body weight in kilograms × duration in hours, where the MET value scales with how hard you’re pulling — light effort on an ergometer sits around 3.5–4.8 METs, moderate effort around 7, and vigorous, competitive-pace rowing can exceed 12. Because rowing recruits the legs, core, and back simultaneously, its MET values run comparably high to running at equivalent perceived effort, which is part of why it’s popular as a low-impact but high-calorie-burn alternative.

Rowers and CrossFit-style training programs use this calculation to compare the energy cost of erg pieces against other workouts, and coaches use it to balance calorie expenditure across mixed training blocks that combine rowing intervals with other cardio or strength work. Because intensity on an ergometer can be read directly off the display (splits, watts), it’s easier to select an accurate intensity band for rowing than for many other cardio activities.
