About this calculator
The calculator applies the hypergeometric distribution: given a deck of N cards containing K target cards, the probability of drawing exactly k target cards in a sample of n draws (without replacement) is P(X=k) = [C(K,k) × C(N−K, n−k)] / C(N,n), where C is the combinations function; "at least k" sums this expression from k up to the maximum possible.
Card game and collectible-card game players — Magic: The Gathering, poker, and similar games — use this to work out the odds of drawing a specific card or combination by a given turn, and statisticians use the same hypergeometric math for any without-replacement sampling problem, from quality-control inspection to lottery odds.
