About this calculator

The Framingham general cardiovascular disease risk score, updated by D’Agostino and colleagues in 2008, estimates the probability that someone will have a cardiovascular event — heart attack, stroke, heart failure or peripheral artery disease — within the next 10 years, based on age, sex, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, whether that blood pressure is treated, current smoking status and diabetes.

Unlike the original 1998 Framingham score, which predicted coronary heart disease alone, the 2008 general CVD version captures a broader range of cardiovascular outcomes, and it remains a widely used tool in primary care for deciding whether a patient’s risk level justifies starting statin therapy, more aggressive blood pressure control, or lifestyle counseling — often alongside newer pooled-cohort equations depending on the guideline being followed.

This calculator takes your age, cholesterol values, blood pressure and risk-factor history and returns your estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk.
