About this calculator

Veterinary guidance, including from the American Association of Feline Practitioners, has moved away from the old “multiply by seven” rule of thumb toward a curve that better reflects how fast cats actually mature: a cat’s first year of life is considered roughly equivalent to 15 human years because kittens reach reproductive maturity so quickly, the second year adds another 9 human years (bringing a 2-year-old cat to about 24 in human terms), and each year after that adds approximately 4 human years, reflecting a slower aging pace once physical maturity is reached.

Cat owners and veterinarians use this updated formula to put a cat’s life stage in more intuitive human terms when discussing age-related health screening, nutrition changes, or behavior, since a straight multiply-by-seven estimate badly overstates a kitten’s human-equivalent age and understates an older cat’s.

Enter your cat’s age in years, and this calculator applies the 15-9-4 formula to return its age in human years.
