This calculator moves past the old “multiply by 7” myth and uses a stepped model of canine aging that reflects how fast dogs mature early on: the first year of a dog's life counts as about 15 human years, the second as about 9 more, and each year after that as about 5. Dogs reach adulthood far faster than humans and then age more slowly and steadily; the model does not adjust for size, although larger breeds tend to age faster in their senior years than small ones. Research continues to refine such curves — a widely cited 2020 epigenetic study (based on DNA methylation, a molecular “aging clock”) proposed human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31 for adult dogs — but all of them agree that a flat multiplier is wrong.
