About this calculator

The old "multiply by 7" rule doesn't reflect how dogs actually age — small and giant breeds age at very different rates, especially after the first two years. Modern veterinary aging tables (the kind used by the AVMA and major veterinary associations) instead give year-by-year human-equivalent ages broken out by breed size class — toy/small, medium, large and giant — because small breeds mature faster as puppies but then age more slowly, while giant breeds mature slower but age faster and have shorter lifespans overall.

This calculator looks up your dog's age against the correct size-class table to return its human-equivalent age. Dog owners use it to gauge what life stage — puppy, adult, senior — their dog is really in, veterinarians use breed-size aging tables to time senior wellness screening appropriately, and pet insurers use similar aging curves when pricing policies by breed.
